Outdoor Club Championships 2004.
This years Outdoor Club Championships were held on Sunday
8th August at
our Greetham Ground. The day was hot and sunny, for
many too hot but there was a very testing wind especially for the Longbow
archers, I am sure at one point my arrows were going sideways down to the
target. It was great to see so many club members taking part, they were Alex
Asher, Steve Brown, Lynn and Steve Cooley, Sheila Croft, Sue Custance, Mandy and
Roly Cox, Michael Daymond, Alexandria, Kirsty, Anne and Alan Davies, Tom Duncan,
Jill Gornall, Chris Maloney, James, Chris and Chrissie Mortlock, Kaye and Dick
Mundy, Alison, Fiona, Jenny and Gordon Parker, Bethan, Alastair and Phil Pinder,
Wendy and Brian Skinner, Rhys and Owen Smith, thirty-two members, that must be
one of the larger Club Champs.

We shot an American
round which is 2
1/2 dozen arrows at
60 yards, 2 1/2 dozen arrows at
50 yards and 2 1/2 dozen arrows at
40 yards. There were ‘Rutland
Specials’ for some of our newer members and for our younger juniors who can not reach 60 yards.
Afterwards there was a
buffet tea many thanks to Emma and Kevin Smith (Rhys and Owen’s parents) who very kindly manned the
kettles and teapots, an essential role on such a hot day. At the end of the
shoot there was a raffle which raised money for club funds.
Richard Custance was the judge for
the day, with best gold and worst white awards to be adjudicated, arrow values
and miss-calls, Richard was certainly kept busy. The Lady Paramount for the day
was Julie Sharp who is the assistant manager of the Clubhouse at Greetham Valley
Golf Club.
For the second
time we had a competition for the best gold and worst white, the best gold is
for the arrow closest to the cross in the centre of the gold at the longest
distance, the winner was Susan Custance, she
must be good, she won last year too! The worst white is for the
arrow closest to the edge of the target
but still scoring at the shortest distance, this
caused a lot of exitment on my boss as I thought I had got it until Alex
Asher again the winner from last year
got even closer to the outside line, well done Alex, I WILL beat you next year!
In the Ladies Recurve Kaye
was in third place with a score of 592, 90 hits and 15
golds, Sue was second with a score of 664,
90 hits and 35 golds and Mandy
was the winner of the shield with a score of 664 the same as Sue, 90 hits but with 37 golds. In the Ladies
Compound Jill had to retire with an equipment
failure, leaving Wendy as our only Lady Compound with
a score of 764,
90 hits and 67
golds. In the Ladies Longbow Chrissie won the silver salver with a score of 249, 65 hits and no golds. With a score of 484, 84
hits and 26
golds Alexandria
won the Junior Ladies Recurve shield. In the Junior Ladies Compound Alison won the silver
tankard with a score of 728,
90 hits and 52
golds.
In the Gents Recurve Brian
came third with a score of 678,
90 hits and 67
golds, Steve Cooley was second with a score of 684, 90 hits and 45 golds and Tom won the shield with a score of 762, 90 hits and 67 golds, the first two places were a repeat of last year.
In the Gents Compound the winner was Alan
with a score of 756,
90 hits and 67
golds, with Chris in second place with
752, 90 hits and 64 golds and Dick was third with 710, 90 hits and 47 golds.
In the Gents Longbow Steve
Brown won the horn trophy with a score of 370, 76
hits and 8
golds. Chris Maloney won the Barebow
shooting a Flatbow with a score of 288, 55 hits and 6 golds. In
the Junior Gents Recurve James won the shield with a score of 623, 89 hits and 27
golds with Alex in second place with
360, 78 hits and 7 golds. Alastair won the Junior Longbow trophy with a score of
258, 59 hits and 4 golds shooting one of the Rutland Specials.
This year the club purchased four
new trophies for the Rutland Special rounds, the Junior Ladies trophy was
awarded to Kirsty, the Junior Gents to Rhys, the Ladies trophy to Sheila and the
Gents trophy was not awarded this year. The New Members Trophy was also awarded to Sheila.
The wooden man trophy for the highest handicap adjusted
score went to Rhys. The pairs trophies are awarded to a pair of archers who
are selected at random with the highest combined score was won by Kirsty and Tom.
The Ron Jennings Trophies are awarded to the Lady and Gent
who has the highest increase in their scores between the first two distances,
the Lady winner was Alexandria
and the Gents winner was Rhys.
The wooden spoon is awarded to the archer with the highest number of whites,
this year it went to Chrissie, again!

Such events do not happen without
the hard work of your Committee, special thanks must go to the Equipment Officer
who modified the target numbers so that they would fit the new stands and set
out the field on the Saturday ready for shooting on the Sunday, with the heat on
the day I am sure it was a great relief to many archers that they did not have
to move bosses before the shooting could begin. Also many thanks must go the Records Officer Jill Gornall
for organising the score sheets and producing the results at the end of the day,
not an easy task.
Thank you to all who helped to
make the day the success that it was, especially the archers.
